Autohemotherapy or Autologous Blood Treatment involves withdrawal of a small amount of blood from the vein and the reinjection of the same blood back into a muscle. The aim of the therapy is to enhance the immune system's ability to fight disease. Autohemotherapy is used by alternative practitioners in Europe and USA to treat chronic skin problems, such as intractable acne, eczema; chronic prostatitis, allergic diseases, fibromyalgia and other problems related to immune system dysfunction.
Although its curative mechanism is not known, it's postulated that autohemotherapy modulates the immune response of the body to autologous antigens, external bacterial and viral pathogens.
The usual course of treatment involves drawing blood and reinjecting it into patient muscle three times a week for total 10-20 sessions. The course may be repeated as needed.
